How to Make Essential Oil Mosquito Repellent Spray

This article will introduce how to make an essential oil mosquito repellent spray. It's actually simple and fun to make, so let's try it together! Among the many types of natural essential oils, some have been recognized for their insect-repelling properties. This topic is specifically discussed in another article.

To make an essential oil spray, you must first understand that essential oils are not water-soluble. If you drop essential oil into a cup of water, most of the essential oil will float on the surface, and the two will not mix. To stably combine essential oil and water, an emulsifier (also known as a surfactant or dispersant) is needed. Emulsifier molecules usually have one oil-loving end and one water-loving end, which helps them bind essential oil molecules and disperse them evenly in water. For example, soap is a type of surfactant. When cleaning a greasy pan with soap, the oil from the pan mixes with the soapy water and becomes cloudy. The soap molecules bind to the oil molecules and mix them into the water, helping to remove the grease.

Ingredients

Here's a formula I often use to make 100g of spray. I use hydrogenated castor oil as the emulsifier. If you choose another type of emulsifier, please follow the recommended dosage for that emulsifier.

  • 75% Alcohol 88g
  • Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil 5g
  • Hydrogenated Castor Oil 5g
  • Glycerin 2g

Equipment

  • Beaker
  • Stirring Rod
  • Funnel
  • Spray Bottle
  • Labels

Instructions

  1. Mix the essential oil and hydrogenated castor oil thoroughly in the beaker.
  2. Pour in the alcohol and glycerin, and stir well.
  3. Use a funnel to bottle and label.

How to Use

Similar to regular mosquito repellent products, spray on clothing or skin, and reapply as needed based on how long the scent lasts. It is recommended to use it up as soon as possible. I make a new batch of mosquito repellent every year.
