How to crochet from a chain stitch

Structure of the ch st

Each ch st consists of three loops(lps). Two lps are visible from the front.

The lps marked in red are called the back lps.

The lps marked in red are called the front lps.

Turn the ch over, and you will see lps in the very center, called the "back bumps," marked in green.
Common methods of picking up lps

The first method is to insert hook through the back lp in the direction of the arrows.

The second method involves inserting the hook through the back bumps in the direction of the arrows.

The third method involves simultaneously inserting the hook through the back lp and the back bump in the direction of the arrow.
