Starting

First, make a slip knot and chain 16 stitches. You can see detailed step-by-step tutorial for both techniques in this article .
Row 1
Is the starting chain complete?

Next, we will begin crocheting the first row. We will work the stitches in the "back bump" of the chain stitch. In this article, you can see how to find the back bumps of the chain stitch.
First, locate the back bump of the second stitch, and then insert the crochet hook in the direction of the arrow.

1. Yarn over and pull through a loop in the direction of the arrow. There are now two loops on the hook.

2. Yarn over, this time pull through all the loops, and you have completed the first "single crochet stitch".

Next, insert the crochet hook into the next stitch and repeat steps 1 and 2 above to complete the second single crochet stitch (sc).

Then crochet a sc in each of the following stitches.

Then make one chain stitch. This chain stitch is the standing stitch for the next row and is not counted as one stitch.

Turn, and the first row is complete.
Paragraph 2

At the beginning of the second row, insert the hook into the first stitch.

Then repeat steps 1 and 2 mentioned in the first row to complete the first sc.

Work sc across.
Then you need to crochet one chain stitch before turning and crocheting the next row.
Row 3-8

Next, crochet row 3 to 8 in the same way. Do not make the chain stitch at the end of row 8. Try to maintain the tension during the process so that the stitches are neat.
Switch Color
We need to change color before we start make the 9th row.

At the end of row 8, find the "front loop" and "left leg" of the sc and insert the hook.

With the next color of yarn, yarn over and pull through all the loops.

Make a chain stitch (ch 1) with the new color yarn, then you can pull out the old color yarn. This completes the color-switching step. Cut the old color yarn, leaving a 10cm tail.

Next, turn and you can proceed to row 9.
Row 9

Next, using the new color, sc across. Don't forget to ch 1 before turning and crocheting the next row.
Row 10-16

Crochet row 10 to 16 in the same way. The coaster is now complete. Cut the yarn, leaving a 10 cm tail.
Finish

Pull the crochet hook upwards to pull the end of the yarn out.

Slightly tighten the yarn to finish.
Weaving in ends
This Old Street Castella coaster has four ends. The next step is to weave all four ends inside the stitches to complete the coaster. You can find tutorials on weaving in ends in this article . You can also see a video demonstration of weaving in ends in the next paragraph.
